Soundproofing a separating concrete floor and meeting the demands of Part E Building Regulations mainly concerns the elimination of impact noise. Airborne noise is less of an issue as the mass of a concrete floor can absorb airborne noise transmission without the need to install acoustic materials. Acoustic solutions can either be installed below the screed (acoustic underscreed layers) or on top of the screed (resilient acoustic floor coverings). When installed below the screed an edge strip is also installed to prevent acoustic flanking. Acoustic flanking refers to noise escaping the acoustic floor treatment which can compromise Part E Building Regulation tests. These solutions isolate the screed from the floor and significantly reduce impact noise.
